अवरोध के पार
एमए के प्रथम वर्ष के दौरान अंग्रेज़ी के विक्टोरियन कवि अल्फ्रेड टेनिसन की एक कविता "क्रॉसिंग द बार" का अनुवाद किया था मैंने। वरिष्ठ साहित्यकारों से सराहना तो मिली ही इस पर, मुझे सबसे ज़्यादा संतुष्टि तब हुई जब अंग्रेज़ी विभाग में सेवारत मेरी प्रिय प्रोफेसर डॉ कुमुद तिवारी जी ने इस अनुवाद पर 'करेक्ट' और 'एक्सीलेंट' जैसे शब्दों की मुहर लगा दी।
डॉ तिवारी मैम से बीए के तीन साल अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य पढ़ने का सौभाग्य मिला मुझे। तिवारी मैम और डॉ मीता वर्मा मैम के समझाने और पढ़ाने का अंदाज़ आज तक मेरी स्मृतियों की धरोहर है। तिवारी मैम से संपर्क पिछले कुछ समय तक बना रहा, जब तक वह भोपाल में रहीं, रिटायरमेंट के कुछ साल बाद तक भी। शादी के बाद जोड़े से उनका आशीर्वाद लेने भी उनके घर गया था। तब उन्होंने बहुत सी बातें की और मेरी पत्नी को बहू की तरह स्नेह व विदाई दी। अभिभूत हुआ मैं। उनकी सौम्य, तरल, सरल और शांत छवि मेरे मन में बेहद सम्मान के साथ स्थापित है। हालांकि उनका कहा पूरा नहीं कर पाया और अनुवाद का सिलसिला आगे बढ़ा नहीं, फिर भी उनके आशीष से सिक्त इस अनुवाद को तकरीबन 15 साल बाद भी अपनी डायरी में सहेज रखा है।
यहां टैनिसन की मूल अंग्रेज़ी कविता और उसका हिन्दी अनुवाद साझा करता हूं जो एक तरह से मेरे लिए धरोहर है, जिसकी वजह मैं अभी-अभी बता गया हूं।

ढलता सूरज और सांझ का सितारा, Sunset and evening star,
और मेरे लिए एक बिल्कुल साफ़ आवाज़! And one clear call for me!
ऐ काश! कोई भी क्रन्दन न करे किनारा, And may there be no moaning of the bar,
जब मैं करूं समुद्री सफ़र का आगाज़ When I put out to sea,
ज्वार भाटे मचलते हैं यूं तो शांत से, But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
लेकिन ध्वनि व फ़ेन से लबालब, Too full for sound and foam,
जबकि आया था जिस अतल गहरे प्रांत से When that which drew from out the boundless deep
लौट रहा हूं उसकी को फिर अब! Turns again home.
गोधूलि का उजाला और संध्या की घण्टियां, Twilight and evening bell,

Tennyson is believed to have written the poem (after suffering a serious illness) while on the sea, crossing the Solent from Aldworth to Farringford on the Isle of Wight. Separately, it has been suggested he may have written it on a yacht anchored in Salcombe. "The words", he said, "came in a moment" Shortly before he died, Tennyson told his son to "put 'Crossing the Bar' at the end of all editions of my poems".The poem contains four stanzas that generally alternate between long and short lines. Tennyson employs a traditional ABAB rhyme scheme. Scholars have noted that the form of the poem follows the content: the wavelike quality of the long-then-short lines parallels the narrative thread of the poem.
